Best Route to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro Routes Overview

There are seven official routes to reach the summit, Uhuru Peak:

  • Northern Circuit Route
  • Lemosho Route
  • Shira Route
  • Machame Route ("Whiskey Route")
  • Rongai Route
  • Marangu Route ("Coca-Cola Route")
  • Umbwe Route

Each route has its own highlights, and the best route depends on your preferences, experience level, and how many days you have for your trek.

Highest Success Rate & Overall Best Routes

For most climbers, reaching the summit is the goal. The Lemosho Route and Machame Route (over 7 or 8 days) are the best routes to climb Kilimanjaro thanks to their excellent acclimatization profile and moderate terrain. These routes consistently deliver the highest summit success rates and stunning views.

Most Scenic Kilimanjaro Route

If breathtaking scenery is your top priority, the Lemosho Route wins hands down. It approaches from the west and offers incredible views across the Shira Plateau, lush rainforests, and dramatic ridgelines.

Quietest Kilimanjaro Route

Prefer solitude? Choose the Rongai Route, which starts on the northern side of the mountain near the Kenyan border. This route offers a true wilderness experience and fewer climbers, though it has a slightly lower success rate due to limited acclimatization opportunities.

Most Adventurous Route

For those seeking a unique climbing adventure, the Crater Camp Route or Umbwe Route are thrilling options. They're steep and challenging — ideal for experienced trekkers looking for an off-the-beaten-path experience.
