Best Time to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro

When Is the Best Time of Year to Climb Kilimanjaro?

The best time to trek Mount Kilimanjaro is during the dry seasons: December to mid-March, and late June to October. These months offer the best weather conditions — clear skies, warm days, minimal rain, and incredible summit views.

Best months:

  • January
  • February
  • July
  • August
  • September
  • October

While it's possible to climb Kilimanjaro year-round, we recommend avoiding April and November, which are the main rainy seasons. Trails can be slippery, and visibility is often poor during those months.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January – February – Early March

Ideal trekking conditions. Expect mostly dry, clear days with great visibility. There's a small chance of light rain and snow above 14,000 ft — perfect for breathtaking summit photos. Best for climbers who want fewer crowds and beautiful summit snow.

March – April – May

Wet and challenging months. Early March may be pleasant, but as the month progresses, rains increase, creating muddy trails and reduced visibility. April and early May mark the long rains, and climbing is not recommended then. Best for experienced trekkers seeking solitude on the Rongai Route or Northern Circuit Route, which are drier and less crowded.

June – July – August – September

Peak Kilimanjaro trekking season. These are the most popular months, combining excellent weather with the summer holidays in the US and Europe. Expect clear skies and cool nights. Best for those who want stable weather and don't mind seeing other climbers. For quieter treks, consider June or September.

October – November

Short rains season. November brings lighter, shorter rains, often in the late afternoon. Trails are quieter, and the Northern Routes remain relatively dry. Best for experienced hikers who want peace and solitude with mild rain.
