Overview
Travel through centuries of East African coastal history at Kilwa Kisiwani and Kilwa Kivinje, then continue into Nyerere National Park for three days of wilderness activities. The journey combines historic ruins and fishing villages with a Rufiji River boat safari, guided walking safari and game drives focused on elephant, lion, buffalo, giraffe and the rare African wild dog. Dar es Salaam to Kilwa
After breakfast, drive approximately five to six hours from Dar es Salaam to Kilwa along Tanzania's historic southern coastal trade route.
Explore the Kilwa Kisiwani Ruins
After breakfast, travel by boat to Kilwa Kisiwani for a guided tour of the island's historic ruins and Islamic architecture, reminders of the city's role in the East African gold and ivory trade.
Kilwa Kivinje Heritage Tour
Explore Kilwa Kivinje and learn about its complex history as a nineteenth-century trading centre and German administrative headquarters. Visit the surrounding coastal communities and gain insight into the region's Swahili heritage.
Kilwa to Nyerere National Park
Depart Kilwa after breakfast and travel by road to Nyerere National Park. Enter the park and enjoy a game drive en route to Nje Bush Camp.
Rufiji River Boat Safari and Game Drive
Take a boat safari along the Rufiji River, watching for hippos, crocodiles, aquatic birds and animals gathering on the banks. After a picnic lunch, continue with a game drive in search of elephant, buffalo, lion, giraffe and African wild dog.
Walking Safari and Late-Afternoon Game Drive
Rise early for a guided walking safari with an armed ranger, focusing on tracks, plants, insects and the park's smaller details. Return to camp for breakfast, then set out again for a late-afternoon game drive.
Fly to Dar es Salaam
Transfer to the airstrip for your included flight from Nyerere National Park to Dar es Salaam.
