The Machame Route is the second most popular route on Kilimanjaro and is considered the most scenic. Known as the Whiskey route, it offers stunning views and diverse terrain. The route starts from the southwest and approaches the summit via the Barafu route. With 6 days, there is adequate time for acclimatization, which increases the chance of reaching the summit.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Trek through lush rainforest to Machame Camp. Duration: 5-6 hours.
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Trek through heath and moorland with views of Kilimanjaro. Duration: 4-5 hours.
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
Trek past Lava Tower and descend to Barranco. Great acclimatization day. Duration: 6-7 hours.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Climb the Barranco Wall and trek to Karanga Camp. Duration: 4-5 hours.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Trek to Barafu Camp for rest before summit. Duration: 3-4 hours.
Summit Day - Uhuru Peak
Midnight summit attempt. Reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) for sunrise. Descend to Mweka Gate. Duration: 14-16 hours.
