Mandatory Tanzania Travel Insurance and Kilimanjaro Trekking Cover

Planning a trip to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, explore the Serengeti, or enjoy a holiday in Zanzibar? Having the right insurance is an important part of preparing for your journey.

Travellers should understand that there are two separate considerations: Tanzania's mandatory inbound travel insurance requirements and comprehensive travel insurance that covers the activities planned during their visit.

Tanzania introduced a mandatory inbound travel insurance requirement for eligible foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania from 1 October 2026. Zanzibar has its own inbound insurance arrangements. In addition, anyone planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro should arrange suitable insurance for high-altitude trekking, emergency medical treatment, and evacuation.

At Alpine Chat Adventure, we encourage all our guests to check their insurance requirements before travelling and ensure that their cover matches their itinerary and planned activities.

1. Is Travel Insurance Mandatory for Tanzania?

Yes. Under the inbound travel insurance arrangements introduced in October 2026, eligible foreign visitors entering Tanzania must obtain the applicable designated inbound insurance policy, subject to the relevant exemptions and transitional provisions.

The policy you need depends on your first point of entry into Tanzania.

If You Arrive in Mainland Tanzania First

If your international flight arrives at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), or another entry point on Mainland Tanzania, you should check the applicable inbound insurance requirement and obtain the designated policy through the National Insurance Corporation (NIC).

Official application website: https://inbound.nicinsurance.co.tz/

If You Arrive in Zanzibar First

If Zanzibar is your first point of entry into Tanzania, the applicable inbound insurance is provided through the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC).

Travelling Between Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar

For a trip that includes both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, the applicable policy is generally determined by your first point of entry. A valid, applicable policy should not need to be duplicated simply because your itinerary includes both destinations. Specific exemptions and existing-policy arrangements may apply, so confirm your circumstances with the relevant authority before departure.

The designated inbound policy is generally valid for up to 92 days, subject to its terms and conditions. Check the current premium, eligibility, coverage limits, and requirements on the official website before applying.

Important: Keep your insurance certificate and any associated QR code accessible throughout your journey. Check the current entry requirements before travelling, as regulations and exemptions can change.

2. Does Mandatory Inbound Insurance Cover Kilimanjaro Climbing?

Do not assume that Tanzania's mandatory inbound travel insurance provides all the protection you need for a Kilimanjaro expedition.

The inbound policy and comprehensive travel insurance serve different purposes. The government-required policy has its own defined benefits, limits, and conditions. A separate travel insurance policy may be necessary to cover the full costs associated with high-altitude trekking and other unexpected travel expenses.

Before climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, arrange suitable insurance that explicitly covers:

  • ✓High-altitude trekking: Cover for trekking on Mount Kilimanjaro up to 5,895 metres (19,341 feet).
  • ✓Emergency medical expenses: Treatment for illness or injury during your trip.
  • ✓Mountain rescue and evacuation: Appropriate cover for evacuation from remote mountain areas, including helicopter evacuation where available and covered.
  • ✓Hospital treatment: Costs associated with emergency treatment and hospitalization.
  • ✓Medical repatriation: Transport back to your home country if medically necessary and covered by your policy.
  • ✓Trip cancellation and interruption: Protection against eligible unforeseen events that prevent you from travelling or completing your trip.
  • ✓Travel delays and baggage: Cover for eligible flight disruptions, delayed journeys, lost baggage, or damaged belongings.

Check the policy wording carefully. Some standard travel insurance policies exclude high-altitude activities above a specified elevation, mountaineering, or rescue in remote areas.

When speaking to an insurer, explain that you plan to undertake a guided trek on Mount Kilimanjaro, reaching an altitude of 5,895 metres. Ask the insurer to confirm in writing that the exact activity and elevation are covered.

3. Why Is Kilimanjaro Travel Insurance Important?

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is an incredible experience, but it involves remote terrain, changing weather, high altitude, and physical challenges.

Even well-prepared trekkers can experience illness, injury, or altitude-related problems. If you need medical attention or evacuation, the associated expenses can be substantial.

Suitable insurance can help protect you against eligible unexpected costs, including:

  • ✓Emergency medical treatment during your climb.
  • ✓Evacuation from the mountain following a serious illness or injury.
  • ✓Hospitalization and medically necessary transport.
  • ✓Eligible trip cancellation or interruption expenses.
  • ✓Lost or delayed baggage and travel disruption.
  • ✓Medical repatriation, if included in your policy.

Remember that insurance only pays for expenses covered under its terms and conditions. Exclusions, limits, deductibles, and authorization requirements can affect whether a claim is accepted.

4. Do I Need Helicopter Evacuation Cover?

We strongly recommend checking whether your insurance includes appropriate mountain rescue and emergency evacuation benefits, including helicopter evacuation where available.

Kilimanjaro's altitude and remote terrain can make evacuation complicated. A helicopter rescue may not be possible in every location or weather condition, and other evacuation methods may be necessary.

Before purchasing a policy, confirm:

  • ✓Whether rescue from Mount Kilimanjaro is covered.
  • ✓Whether helicopter evacuation is included or requires an additional benefit.
  • ✓Whether cover applies up to the summit elevation of 5,895 metres.
  • ✓Whether evacuation to a suitable medical facility is covered.
  • ✓Whether medical repatriation to your home country is included.
  • ✓Whether you must contact the insurer or assistance provider before evacuation, where circumstances permit.

Some policies cover transport to the nearest appropriate hospital but do not automatically cover repatriation to your home country. These benefits should be checked separately.

5. Is My Regular Health Insurance Enough?

Not necessarily. Your existing health insurance or standard travel policy may not cover every aspect of an international adventure trip.

Some policies exclude high-altitude trekking, mountain rescue, helicopter evacuation, or activities above a particular elevation. Others may provide emergency medical cover but exclude trip cancellation, baggage, or repatriation.

Read the policy wording before you travel and disclose any pre-existing medical conditions as required by the insurer.

If your existing policy excludes Kilimanjaro trekking or does not provide sufficient evacuation protection, ask your insurer about suitable additional cover.

6. What About Medical Evacuation and Repatriation?

Medical evacuation involves transporting someone who is ill or injured to an appropriate medical facility. Repatriation generally refers to arranging medically necessary transport back to their home country.

These services may involve different benefits, conditions, and costs.

Some travel insurance policies include emergency evacuation and repatriation, while others provide limited cover or require an additional plan. Certain specialist providers also offer evacuation or travel assistance memberships.

Before choosing any provider, confirm the exact services offered, the geographical coverage, altitude restrictions, exclusions, and financial limits. Do not assume that a rescue membership and a comprehensive travel insurance policy provide identical protection.

Your policy should suit your personal circumstances and the requirements of your planned expedition.

7. When Should I Purchase Travel Insurance?

Arrange your insurance as early as possible, preferably when you begin booking your flights and tour.

Buying appropriate cover early may help protect eligible prepaid travel expenses against specified cancellation events, depending on the policy and when the relevant event occurs.

Before leaving home:

  • ✓Obtain the mandatory inbound insurance applicable to your first point of entry into Tanzania.
  • ✓Arrange comprehensive travel insurance that covers your planned activities.
  • ✓Confirm high-altitude trekking cover up to 5,895 metres.
  • ✓Check medical evacuation, mountain rescue, and repatriation benefits.
  • ✓Read the exclusions and understand how to contact your insurer in an emergency.
  • ✓Save digital and printed copies of your insurance documents.

Do not wait until you arrive in Tanzania to discover that your policy excludes your planned trek or does not meet the entry requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tanzania and Kilimanjaro Travel Insurance

Is travel insurance mandatory when visiting Tanzania?

Tanzania's mandatory inbound insurance requirement took effect on 1 October 2026 for eligible foreign visitors, subject to applicable exemptions and transitional provisions. The designated provider depends on whether your first point of entry is Mainland Tanzania or Zanzibar.

If I already have travel insurance, do I still need the mandatory inbound policy?

Your existing international policy does not automatically replace the designated inbound policy. Check the current official requirements, including any exemptions or arrangements for a previously purchased valid policy.

Does Tanzania's mandatory insurance cover Mount Kilimanjaro?

Do not assume that the inbound policy provides all the cover required for a Kilimanjaro climb. Check its benefits and exclusions, and arrange additional insurance that explicitly covers high-altitude trekking, emergency medical treatment, and evacuation as needed.

What altitude should my Kilimanjaro insurance cover?

Your policy should explicitly cover trekking to at least 5,895 metres, the summit elevation of Mount Kilimanjaro. Confirm this directly with your insurer before purchasing.

Do I need helicopter evacuation insurance?

We strongly recommend checking for mountain rescue and emergency evacuation cover, including helicopter evacuation where available. Confirm the terms and conditions because not every policy includes these benefits.

Can I travel to Tanzania without insurance?

Eligible foreign visitors must comply with the applicable inbound insurance requirement. Failure to meet the current entry requirements may cause delays or problems at the border. Confirm your eligibility and insurance arrangements before departure.

Where can I obtain the mandatory inbound travel insurance?

For visitors whose first point of entry is Mainland Tanzania, consult the National Insurance Corporation at https://inbound.nicinsurance.co.tz/.

For visitors whose first point of entry is Zanzibar, consult the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation at https://inbound.visitzanzibar.go.tz/.

What documents should I carry?

Keep your mandatory inbound insurance certificate and QR code, your comprehensive travel insurance policy details, emergency assistance contacts, and relevant proof of cover readily accessible.
